My Favorite Rotary Cutting Method
I always used to cut my fabric using the lines on my cutting mat. Which led to too many cutting mats being ruined quickly, and my fabric not always being accurate. Then I saw someone cutting fabric and using the ruler for measurement instead of the mat, once I made this switch my cutting mats lasted longer and my fabric was more accurate. But, I still run across people who cut fabric the other way, so it seemed only necessary to share this video.
Here are the products I’m using in this video:
- Olfa Ergonomic Rotary Cutter
- Creative Grids 8 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Ruler
- Creative Grids 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ Ruler
- White Cutting Mat by the Tattooed Quilter
This is a technique I learned a while ago and I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t been cutting my fabric like this all along. So maybe this is already how you cut your fabric, but if not, I hope you learned something new.
In this video, I’ll be using my Olfa rotary cutter. I’m right handed, and so I have the blade on the right handed side of the cutter. But you can actually take the blade off and put it on the other side if you’re left handed. I’ll also be using this Creative Grids ruler. Creative Grids are my favorite rulers because they’re just so easy to see and follow the lines, and they have this little gripper.
I recently learned that Creative Grids also makes left handed rulers. So, if you’re watching this video and you’re left handed, you can get a left handed ruler, you can switch your ergonomic rotary cutter to left handed, and then cutting for you will be just a mirror image of how I do it. Alright, let’s get started.

Thanks for the links to the left handed rulers! I’m excited to order them!
Hello Rani,
Aren’t those left handed rulers wonderful? We hope you enjoy them! Let us know if there are other things that are difficult to find as a left handed creator and we will try to find other recommendations.
Take care,

It’s certainly difficult to break old habits. I only just recently learned of this technique. I’ve been trying, and just last night ordered 2 Creative Grid rulers that will arrive tomorrow. Another skill I need to obtain is proper rotary cutter use. My blades never seem to cut well for long. After a few nice clean cuts I get skipping. So frustrating!
