Video :: Easy Sewing Zipper Pouch Tutorial

Back in 2012 I wrote a tutorial for just the zipper part of a zipper pouch, so that you can make the pouch whatever size you want! It’s been almost nine years now and that older tutorial is still where I’ve been pointing people when asked how I make my pouches.

Since I’m slowly working on adding some video tutorials to my YouTube channel, it seemed like a good time to share a video with all of you! This is still the same method I’ve been using for years, just in video form. If you’re more of a reader than a watcher, you can find the original tutorial here.

To make a 6 1/2” x 8 1/2” zipper pouch like this one, the supplies you need are:

  • Sewing machine and zipper foot
  • (4) 7” x 9” rectangles of fabric for pouch and lining
  • (2) 7” x 9” rectangles Pellon Fusible Thermolam TP971F
  • (2) 1 1/4” x 2” rectangles of fabric for zipper tabs
  • 9” or longer zipper

A quick note about the zipper tabs, I always cut them 1/4” wider than the zipper. The zipper in the video is a standard, 1” wide zipper tape. However, if you’re using a purse zipper or metal zipper, the tape will be wider. Just measure the zipper and then add 1/4”. I generally always cut my tabs at 2” long.

Filming videos is way out of my comfort zone (I think I say that ever single time I make one!), but I know that it can really be helpful to see what is happening, not just look at photos and hope you’ve got it.

I hope this helps you gain confidence in pouch making! It can be hard to get those zipper ends neat, but this is my favorite method. If you have any questions or need clarification, please let me know! And if there’s something you’d like to see a video of, leave a comment and I’ll see what I can do!

Happy Sewing, Jennie xo

  1. Thank you for a great tutorial! My granddaughter loves pouches and has several but I’ll be making her more using your tutorials.

  2. Thank you for sharing your method of making the zipper pouch. I liked a lot that you discussed how to place the zipper tabs and seam allowances before sewing around the whole pouch. Many tutorials don’t address that. also, I like it that you said makers could use this tutorial to make any size pouch. I think that is important for people who don’t feel comfortable playing. I am going to link to your tutorial from my blog. Thank you!

  3. I needed an easy-to-understand and follow-along video to teach a beginner how to sew a pouch. Your video was perfect! I love how you quilted the top fabric. Only change I made was topstitching through both the top fabric and liner next to the zipper on both sides.
