Wax Canvas Duffel :: Aurifil Artisan Challenge
For the November Aurifil Artisan Bag Making Challenge I decided to stretch myself and use Wax Canvas for my bag instead of quilting cotton or canvas like I usually use. I chose a Coyote Brown canvas from Fabric Funhouse because I wanted to make a bag for my husband to take to the gym.
I sewed it with Aurifil 40wt in Sand Stone (2370) which blended perfectly with the wax canvas but stood out on the webbing. Since I’d never worked with Wax Canvas before I made a quick boxy pouch using KelbySews Boxy Bag Tutorial. I just used one layer of wax canvas, no interfacing or lining for the boxy pouch and I think I’ll be making a few more with the rest of the fabric.
One thing I wasn’t expecting was the way the wax canvas weathers just from folding and crinkling it while sewing. When my piece arrived I was nervous because it had distinct creases from being folded, but a little bit of sewing and they disappeared into the marbled look of the canvas.
I sew a lot of things, but I rarely make anything that isn’t for women, so I was really excited to make this for my husband and am thrilled he likes it too! But, I’m thinking maybe I too need a matching duffel out of a brighter wax canvas for myself.
I didn’t use many different thread weights before becoming an Aurifil Artisan, but I’m really enjoying the 40wt thread for it’s being slightly thicker but still sewing just as smoothly and easily as 50wt. This is definitely my go to thread for bags and pouches now!
I love it!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Stacy! It was fun and different!
What pattern did you use for that handsome duffle?
I copied a duffel I have for style and just sort of winged it! It turned out to be an easy make!
