My Felt Doll :: Mermaids

|

I made my girls mermaid felt dolls this summer. We found the cutest book, My Felt Doll by Shelley Down of Gingermelon, and had to make them! Since the dolls are entirely hand out of wool felt, they take a little extra time, but the end results were so cute!

I ordered all my felt from Benzie Design, a shop specializing in wool felt and notions. I let each girl choose all the colors for her doll, so they turned out very unique and different.

Lydia named her doll Crystal and chose cool, softer colors.

With some pink, of course.

And Norah named her doll Coral and chose brighter, worker colors.

I especially love the bit of pink on the front of the hair.

Over all, I love the projects and hope to make a couple more dolls from the book. Who knows, right? For now, I hope my girls enjoy them for years to come!

  1. These are unbelievably adorable! Karina has some 14″ Hearts for Hearts dolls and has been designing dresses every once in a while for them. We bought a fancy dress from a lady last Christmas and she’s been wanting one for each doll (she has 4). So we finally took a whole day and picked fabric, designed the dress, and sewed it. It took all day because Karina, who is almost 9, did much of the cutting and sewing. Some on the machine and some by hand. The first dress has about 3 layers in the skirt alone, a sweetheart neckline, and straps to hold it up. Then she decided she wanted another fancy dress, and it was so fun making the first one we did it all over again. New design, even more layers this time. But I did a bit more of the sewing because we didn’t have as much time to devote to it. She still did a lot of the work and some of the sewing herself though. She’s really proud of making the dresses and loves that only one little doll still needs a fancy dress. But the same lady will be at our local holiday bazaar in a week and we can’t wait to pick out one of her dresses and support a small business too. Thanks for sharing the mermaid dolls, they really hit home with me today!
