Straight to the Heart Quilt Block {mini tutorial}
Valentine’s Day is a favorite for me. I just love all the sweet words, hearts, and fun, so when my friends started a little Valentine’s hexagon and coaster swap, I signed up right away. My partner is not a huge fan of pinks, so I made her hexies and the coaster in pretty blues with a little pop of pink. Another friend of mine, Susan of @thefeltedpear was making cute little hearts out of patchwork, so I had to make one too, but I added a little something to mine: three tiny flying geese {flying straight to the heart…hehe!}!
And I thought maybe you’d like to make one too! Since the patchwork is pretty self-explanitory, I thought I’d just give you a few details.
- Download the flying geese template in four sizes here! The squares I used were 1 1/4″ before the seam allowance
- Learn a little bit more about paper piecing at Ellison Lane
- Make the half-square-triangles by sewing two squares right sides together on the diagonal and trimming, or make two triangles at once using Blossom Heart Quilt’s chart to determine the size you cut {I realize it doesn’t show two of the sizes I have here, but if you read her directions, it should still help!}
- The borders I added to my patchwork were the same width as the squares {1 1/4″}
- I stitched big hand quilting stitches around my heart using Perle Cotton thread.
I thought I’d share the hexies I sent too, since they coordinate with the heart almost exactly! I thought this little printable would be a fun Valentine from me to you! If you make one I’d love for you to share it using the tag #straighttotheheartpattern and tag me on Instagram or send me an e-mail. Enjoy!

Love you mini, love hexies. Not sure why this is, but all but one of your pictures are blurred, this is happening on a lot of blogs I follow, the pictures are blurred, not all, just the bigger ones. I read on an IPad, hoping there is a clitch that will get fixed. Like I said this is happening on a lot of others, not just yours.
This turned out super cute and how nice you included a tutorial!
Love your mini heart with the flying geese and the fussy cut little toadstool! Thanks for sharing:-)
This is just lovely, the soft blues work really well as an alternative to pink. x
Aaw, I love the little flying geese you added! Your babies! Super cute!
