Great Granny Twist :: Bonus Quilt Baskets

|

Great-Granny-Twist-BannerIt’s no secret that I love making patchwork things. The Fat Quarter Shop is having a blog hop to celebrate the anniversary of Lori Holt’s Great Granny Squared book, and all the projects feature blocks from the book with a twist.
gga-cover-850_1For my project I started with a pull of low volume fabrics and some bright Anna Maria Horner {prints are from her older Innocent Crush line, and newer Folk Song} because I made my project as a gift for a friend, and I know she loves these fabrics together.
IMG_3372Since I decided to make a smaller project, I chose the Bonus Quilt pattern from the book.
IMG_3374I started off thinking I would make a One Hour Basket {more details and pattern here} with two blocks on each side. But after sewing the blocks I realized they were too large, so, instead, I made two baskets (one for my friend and one for me!).

I put sashing on the sides of each block and then the colored squares, just like the book called for, and then added a 2 ½” low volume strip to each side of the colored squares. Then I put an 4 1/2″ panel of Moda Gray Crossweave on the bottom of each patchwork section to make my panels the same size as the One Hour Basket panels.

Great-Granny-Squared-Baskets-4I really enjoyed using this pattern for these baskets, and I loved the way Lori constructed her blocks, quick and easy with a little trimming!
