Blog Hop :: Forest Fables by Hawethorne Threads {& Giveaway!}

|

Hello and welcome to the Forest Fables blog hop! When Hawethorne Threads contacted me to join this blog hop, I was immediately curious and excited. Not only are the prints unique and lovely, but Hawethorne Threads digitally prints their own fabric, something I just recently learned when I received a sample of it in my Swapaholics Retreat swag bag. I noticed the fabric felt diffierent than what I was used to, so I was thrilled to be a part of this hop and try it out.

Forest-Fables-Pillow-1I received a fat quarter bundle of Forest Fables in the Harvest colorway and I wanted to make a pillow, but with the larger scale of the fabric and the amazing fussy cutting opportunities, I styled it a little different than usual. I had a pattern idea in mind, and then I cut and sewed {no pattern this time, it was a little hap-hazard creation between sewing this and restarting the Aristocats for my girls – because my Netflix  queue is full of cute cartoons…what do grownups watch these days?! I heard of Movie Box as an alternative. Anyway… adjusting my sizing until I had the look I wanted.

Forest-Fables-Pillow-2Since I don’t normally prewash my fabric, I contacted Meaghan and asked about the recommendation, and she confirmed that she doesn’t usually prewash either, so I sewed with my fabric in its crisp, unwashed state, and I loved it. I did not initially switch to a finer needle {I was using a Microtex 80/20}, but decided to about halfway through {I switched to a Microtex 70/10} and it made a world of difference.

Forest-Fables-Pillow-3As I mentioned before, this fabric had some amazing fussy cutting opportunities, so I framed some of them with the smaller prints. I backed my quilted panel with Pellon’s SF101 woven interfacing, and then did some light quilting. I adjusted my stitch length to 3 {I generally sew with a 2.5} because of the higher thread count, and I’m glad I did. The quilting lines just glide over the fabric without being too distracting.

Forest-Fables-Pillow-4I made my pillow oversized, so there would be plenty of room to show off the prints, and then finished it more like a pillow sham with a zipper in the back. I thought this gave the extra space needed to really showcase the fabric {though, I did not factor in that it would also be much more difficult to photograph this way!}. Both my girls love it and have claimed it as their own, I guess I’ll be making another!

Forest-Fables-Pillow-5Edit to add: I felt like a photo of the back was necessary too, I just forgot to take one in the light yesterday. Isn’t it almost as cute as the front?! There’s an invisible zipper at the seam line, you can read more on how I put that together here.
