Patchwork Sleeping Sack :: Craft Book Month at Craft Buds
I’m so guilty of having more sewing books than actual projects made from them. So, I’m excited to be part of Craft Book Month at Craft Buds again this year! Last year I was excited to finally use my Sew Serendipity book, so this year, with a baby due in a couple months, I thought it was about time I broke out Anna Maria Horner’s Handmade Beginnings that my mom gave me while I was pregnant with Norah {I have used it once before to make the baby booties…but they turned out too big…}
Since we already use sleeping sacks, I thought the Patchwork Sleeping Sack would be the perfect choice {hopefully baby 3 will agree}. I’ve been wanting to incorporate some purples, so I added a couple DS Quilts prints I picked up from JoAnn a few weeks ago. When my mom told me she was starting another scrappy trip quilt, I realized that would be the perfect method to piece the patchwork portion of this sleeping sack.
Somehow, when making my original scrappy trip quilt, I failed to read the part in the tutorial about the seam pressing…but when chatting with my mom about her quilt, she mentioned that the seams should be pressed in alternating directions, and wow, it made the whole process so much easier.
I put a couple quilting lines on the patchwork portion through the flannel, because I worried that it wouldn’t hold up in the wash…and sadly, I got a couple puckers, I should have pinned more heavily before quilting. I might have to take them out, we’ll see how it goes.
I put a binding all the way around the small side too, because I tried to serge the edge instead of zigzag, but it was hard to serge those curves, so I thought the binding looked neater. And, since I was using a premade binding I had bought a while back, I knew I had plenty.
I used some Bliss flannel I’ve had for a couple years for the lining and back panel, to make the sleep sack cozy warm. I don’t think it went too well with my choice of binding, but I’ve been wanting to use it for so long that I couldn’t resist.
Now, I have to be honest, it isn’t quite finished. I am toying with the idea of putting in a zipper instead of the recommended velcro. My issue with the velcro is, perhaps I misread the pattern, but now the stitching will show through the front, and I really think it will detract from the patchwork. Since I love how this has turned out, I don’t want to mess it up at the end.
I had a really great time making this, and it turned out much easier than I had imagined. I’m hoping it will be used and loved, and maybe the perfect prop for some newborn photos too.

Love this. Sadly my first grandchild will be born in Townsville, tropical north Queensland, Australia so anything like this is much too hot. I’ve made a couple of quilts to toss on the floor (their house has all tiled floors) or on the grass/beach outside but am keen to find other things to make. Love your bib pattern & have plans to make a few.
Your little sleeping sack turned out so adorable, I can hardly wait to see the little one wearing it!! Your idea to use the scrappy trip patchwork block to do the patchwork is fantastic!!
it’s beautiful, I love the patchwork – I hadn’t thought of using the Scrappy Trip like this but I like it – and I think the binding goes fine with the Bliss floral
What a beautiful sleep sack! I absolutely love the patchwork… it’s not something I would have even considered but WOW! 🙂
Yay! Love this so much, and I’m excited to share on Craft Buds. Just waiting for today’s other post to go up, and I’ll link you up!
It looks so soft and sweet! What about using snaps to close it? Alisa’s done that with the ones she made from that pattern and it looks cute and works great.
I thought I’d leave a comment on the way I did it and I had to laugh b/c my sister beat me to it! If you have snaps they work very well and look cute.
This turned out fantastic Jennie! Your little one is going to look fantastic in it
So very, very precious!
so adorable!
It is so sweet. Sometimes I think it would be nice to be swaddled like a baby again.
I think a zipper is a good idea but maybe put the zipper upside down so that when it is done up the slider is down near baby’s feet not its face. I don’t know just something to think about. Another thing if its not too late a slit in the back means you can check for poos without having to take the baby out of the sleeping suit.
Oh my goodness! This is so cute.
Gorgeous idea to use the scrappy trip patchwork style for this sweet baby sleeping sack! It looks so cute and pretty!

Whatever you decide, zipper or velcro, that sleep sack sure is cute! Great job and I know baby #3 will LOVE it!
It’s beautiful! It’s a joy to look at, imagine with a wonderful baby inside too! Velcro can be a bother sometimes, it’s quite scratchy…
