a season by handWelcome to the final guest post in the A Season by Hand series!  Wow, this series has sure flown by quickly!  But, before we start linking up, we have one more guest, Jane from Jane’s Fabrics and Quilts. Jane also has a shop where she sells fabric, thread, and hexagon templates {hand stitching anyone?}.  She has some great ideas for easy knitting on the go!

Hi, I am Jane from Jane’s Fabrics and Quilts. I am thrilled to be here today. To be among all this talent is humbling.

I love to do hand work! I love to piece my quilts. I love to make hexies, and I adore hand quilting.  All of these things I do all year but there is one thing I save for the summer: knitting!

It is such a portable thing to tuck away and pull out when you have a minute or two. Great for the car, and for me, the best to work on at my daughter’s softball games. Those tournaments can sometimes go all day. It is nice to have some handwork with me.

I know that Sandie showed her crochet washcloths but I knit mine.

I use Sugar and Cream Yarn. It comes in so many pretty colors and I pick what I like. I do not match anything! That makes it so much fun. I use size 8 or 9 needles and can get two wash clothes from a skein. I mix the leftovers two make more.

I use these great washcloths for grandbabies little hands and mouths.  This is last summer’s stack:

I did not get as many done this summer because as I was making them, I gave them away to friends! But still enough to last quite a while!

I also make the scrubbies. But again I knit.  I bought a yard of netting, cut one half inch strips the width of the fabric; and then tied them together to make my own ball of netting.  I then knit with both the netting and the yarn together in a garter stitch. I do 15 stitches to 20 rows with size  9 needles. This is a size I like but you can make then smaller or bigger to fit your  needs. scrubbieThey are just wonderful, and so easy to make.

(I did make more but they are in use!)

I have so enjoyed this Season Of Hand and was delighted to be included. Thank you and I hope you will visit me in the future at  Jane’s Fabrics and Quilts

  1. I started knitting these wash cloths this summer. I love them, and they are such an instant gratification project. I bought several skeins of yarn when Michaels had them on clearance. More to come 🙂

  2. knitted or crocheted washcloths are such a great idea. I have so many of them pinned but never seem to find the time to make them

  3. The only thing I have ever been able to knit is dishcloths…..I prefer to crochet. They are fun quick projects. I never thought of adding the nylon netting to make scrubbies. Thank you!

  4. Much more fun than the boring old washcloths I use for dishcloths! Must resist new hobby though. 🙂

  5. I was delighted to see that you were on the list and delighted to read your post. 🙂 Yes, you’ve posted about these little beauties and I’d think I just didn’t have time to re-teach myself to knit. But…today is different and I’ve saved the instructions and plan to give it a try. I swear, it’s been decades since I knit anything! I know they are the BEST because my neighbor gave me a couple and I love them.

  6. When I went back to school, in my late twenties, I took graphic design classes. I knew I loved working with my hands, but didn’t think I could ‘draw.’ I went on to work in technical illustration, graphic design and marketing for about 15 years.
