Embroidery 101: Block Eight

Questions? Missed a post? Find the index here.

First off, I apologize that this block is almost a week late! I am going to keep on posting {hopefully} on schedule, but I’ll allow a few extra days for the finished quilt tops to enter the giveaway at the end, since I’ve delayed everyone a bit! Things seem to be running a little more smoothly around here, hopefully the streak will continue!

For this block, I didn’t use a lot of color, but if you prefer, I think a lighter color for the center portions of the flower might be lovely.  I doubled my outline and filled it in with Satin Stitch, this used a lot more thread and took a lot longer than I planned.  If you want to do the same, simply draw another line slightly inward of the original, Back Stitch, and then fill with Satin Stitch.  Otherwise, the remainder of the flower and the bud are stitched with a double row of Back Stitch, this would work great for the body too.

The leaves and stem are done with the Stem Stitch {I got tired of Back Stitch, but it would work well too!}.  Also, the new Seed Stitch and Bouillon Knots are used to give more detail to the flower.

While the stitching can be a bit tedious in this pattern, I really like the simple look it achieves, and I hope you do too!

  1. This is just a wonderful block. Satin Stitch not only takes more time but eats of the thread……and is really worth it.

Your Bouillions are so right in this setting. As far as Stem vs. Back Stitch, I find Stem to be much smoother overall, don’t you?

    Great job here!
