Embroidery 101: Fly Stitch
The Fly Stitch is unique and has very few purposes {I have only seen it used for foliage and the like, but I’m sure it has other applications}. It is very simple, but does its job well.
The only trouble I have with the Fly Stitch is that, because of its simplicity, I feel I can only secure my thread by coming to it from another stitch. Fortunately, since it is part of a foliage design, that shouldn’t be a problem, but if anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them.
The Fly Stitch is symbolized by a “y” shape:
Bring the needle through one of the top points of the “y”.
Stitch across to the other top portion of the “y”.
Leave some slack in the stitch, don’t pull it straight across.
Bring the needle up in the center of the “y”. Gently pull the top stitch to form a sharper curve.
Stitch to the bottom of the “y” and pull the stitch mostly tight.
And there you have it, the Fly Stitch. You can top it with a flower if you want, or just use it as foliage.
I love this QAL, I just started it (kind of).
I blogged about it today http://craizeecorner.blogspot.com/2011/08/embroidery-stitch-and-quilt-along.html
Hi!
I just ‘found’ your blog while blog hopping during some sleepless hours , it’s 1 am :-).
I signed up as a follower because I love your posts and info. I think I’m not ready to do the quilt along, but I really need your tutorials on the stitches, because what I learned about those( more years ago than I want to remember LOL) has more or less faded away .
Happy quilting.
