Organize: New Word For The New Year

The year 2014 means getting organized and staying organized. It has been a long time in the coming but I am excited to actually get it there and keep it going.

New-Shelving

This first picture is my closet with new shelving that my husband put in for me in just a few hours. He cut the melamine shelving to fit and slipped them in with just a small wood trim to rest each shelf on. I have had plastic totes stacked on top of each other for a long time. Originally it was working until I started piling things on top of the storage totes. At that point getting into the totes was getting to be an ordeal that was causing me lots of time and trouble. My plan is to keep one tote per shelf and keep the necessary items in each tote that I can access easily when needed.

Closet-Organizing

I have put some small  totes with scraps, sorted by color, on the top shelf along with often used bolts of fabric, interfacing and flannel. Which will also, be easy to access!!

Top-Shelf

The top shelf of the closet hasn’t been touched yet but I have some rearranging to do there too!

Fabric-Cabinets

I did tidy up my fabric in my cabinets by folding and stacking. I still have more sorting to do. I have quite a lot of scraps that can be sorted to a new home in there as well. I haven’t decided on how to store them yet. If you have any ideas I am very open to suggestions.

Sewing-table-before

Now to show just a little bit of what I still have to organize, my sewing table. I would really like to keep my table clear of extra things I am not using at the time. This has been one of my main problem areas as well. I am hoping after getting my whole room reorganized it will help with this space too!

Office-clutter

My sewing room has spilled over into the office, (my husband’s room), oops!! Good thing he is patient and has not complained about it. We have been storing our Christmas decorations in there since cleaning up our basement last Fall. Now we have a plan to put some shelving down there to hold Christmas boxes and a few more totes that we are storing for our daughter that happens to live in Florida.

I think it’s time to get to work, I have a lot more to do as you can see. It is a little hard for me to show these areas of clutter, these are the ones on the immediate list to do. I still have my bedroom and closet. I won’t think about that too much though so I won’t get discouraged and quit.

Jennie and I are really excited for this new year. We have been chatting and planning some new things that we hope you will like.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I have been working on organizing as well. Though I don’t have nearly the stash you do, I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to keep my scraps. I’m thinking I might use some of them more if they were organized according to size, but at the moment they are roughly separated by color (expect for my biggest scrap pile, which is Bonnie and Camille fabric and all those are in one bin).

I did just get a few 31 Keep it Caddys because they are nice sized totes I can keep on my sewing table and put file folders or other containers with sewing supplies in them and then just pick up the whole tote and move it to the floor when I need more space to FMQ or whatever. It has been so much easier to just pick up one tote rather than 47 random jars/containers:)

Hope your organization process is enjoyable. I’m sure productivity will go up too!

  2. I love the idea of organizing, and I wish I could do it more. I usually rush through whatever organization project I have to do because of time constraints. Maybe this will be a good year to put aside a little time each day, or at least try to get something done one day a month or something. I love seeing people’s beautiful sewing rooms looking neat and colorful with the fabric. I wish mine looked like that! (It did once….when I first put everything into it, and before I started any projects!)

  3. Love what you’ve done so far. That glass fronted storage area is gorgeous and it’s so easy to see much of what you have. Just an idea…Looks like you might need a small table/cart to the right of your sewing table – making an L-shape area. Those pincushions, sewing tools, etc. could be placed there to get them off the sewing table itself.

  4. Oh I love your fabric cabinets! I switched my sewing room around with a guest room recently and one of my fabric cabinets doesn’t fit anymore which makes me sad (but I gave up that space for a larger cutting space which is great!). I need to work on organising for my cutting space now as it just ends up being covered in stuff (books, fabric pulls, scrap collecting buckets) that I have to move off. I use this table to baste on as well, so it needs to be cleaned easily!! I tend to then pile stuff up on my pressing station *sigh* maybe I need some more shelves under my cutting table 🙂

  5. WOW…you have just put me to shame! I have so much organizing to do. I to have stuff scattered around in several rooms. I wanted to have it done before the new year, but haven’t even started. I WILL get it done…I will get it done…

  6. Something wonderful about the new year and sorting and organizing. I love your glass front cabinets. A dream! I have sorted and now have 2 full lawn and leaf bags to donate to groups that sew for charities. I love the feeling of lightening the load!

  7. I am pretty envious of that beautifully organized closet and your fabric stash! I need to spend some time in my sewing room as well. I think all those last minute holiday projects caused quite a mess. I will be writing up a scrap series on my blog if you want some ideas on how to use those scraps and get them organized.

  8. I cleaned up my sewing table this morning and my foot found that missing needle!

I love your sewing organization. I do not have that much space, so I need to get a bit more creative, or maybe just finish some things. LOL! I love your cabinets especially!! So pretty!!!
